Over the past 50 years, Tien chi constantly explored the possibilities on ink painting. He has situated his pioneering practice at the intersection between traditional Chinese art and contemporary concepts. He learns from the past, but is free from past constraints. Also engaging with contemporary concepts about space and form, He has redefined the way in which Chinese art is presented and experienced. One work, for example, titled 錯體 Inverse created in 2001.

Tien Chi, original named WENG Tien Chi, alias Ping Zhai, native of Changshu, but born in Suzhou, Jiangsu, china in1949. Tien Chi learnt Chinese painting and calligraphy under tutelage of his father, WENG Yuan, his mother and his grand uncle, WU Hufan, a renowned modern Chinese painter. In his youth, he has been under the instruction of another prominent modern Chinese artist, PAN Tianshou. In 1986, he went to study Western painting in France from Nane Stern.
